Our co-director John Henneberger is a featured speaker at next week’s National Fair Housing Policy and Training Conference, organized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity office (FHEO).
John will join leaders from around the country, including HUD Secretary Julián Castro, former vice president Walter Mondale, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Betsy Julian of the Inclusive Communities Project and many others who will speak on the practice of fair housing. The conference takes place in Washington, D.C. from September 1 to September 3.

John is scheduled to speak at two of the conference’s sessions. He will appear on a panel called Challenges to Segregation, moderated by Phil Tegeler, the executive director of Poverty and Race Research Action Council, and also featuring Sheryl Cashin, a Georgetown University law professor and author of several books including the acclaimed Place, Not Race: A New Vision of Opportunity in America. The panel takes place from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. Eastern time (1:15 to 1:45 Central) on Tuesday, September 1. John will discuss fighting segregation at a neighborhood level, particularly our work with community partners in Houston.
On Thursday, September 3, from 9:35 to 10:35 a.m. Eastern time (8:35 to 9:35 Central), John will participate in a panel called Climate Justice and Fair Housing, moderated by prominent civil rights attorney Michael Allen. He’ll be joined by Mustafa Ali of the Office of Environmental Justice at the Environmental Protection Agency, Kevin Walsh, the associate director of Fair Share Housing Center in New Jersey and FHEO’s own senior advisor Sara Pratt. John plans to talk about how to see environmental injustices in Texas through a fair housing lens, including the hazardous CES site in Houston and the Harbor Bridge proposal in Corpus Christi.
