Texas Housers has spent more than 30 years building Texas’ foremost housing policy research and advocacy organization. Our statewide team of analysts and policy experts in locations such as Austin, Houston, Fort Worth, and San Antonio partner with local grassroots groups in low-income communities of color all over Texas to win fair, affordable, and quality living conditions. And we are looking to add to our team in our search for a new Advocacy Director.
For this Austin-based role, our organization is seeking a driven, organized, and thoughtful person to develop and advance policies and practices that promote the purpose of the United States Fair Housing Act, namely that government agencies at the local, state and federal levels act to eliminate discrimination and achieve truly integrated communities by dismantling the existing vestiges of Jim Crow era residential racial segregation.
The advocacy director works closely with our co-directors, communications team, organizers and researchers to coordinate the organization’s work to influence public policy and government actions in ways that benefit the people whose interests we serve.
A few of those ways include supporting grassroots leaders across Texas to assess public policies and interventions to disrupt barriers to equitable access to decent affordable homes and quality neighborhoods, drafting and advocating the organization’s legislative and policy positions, and identifying and acting on opportunities for public comment and coordinates staff and partners in drafting comments and/or making presentations before governmental bodies.
This role may eventually require travel to prepare and conduct trainings for grassroots activists and advocates on issues related to housing and community development, including through the Texas Housers Academy.
