Texas Housers is searching for our next Deputy Director to lead our team and advocacy

Texas Housers is the state’s leading housing policy research and advocacy organization. We believe that all people should have a decent home in a safe, healthy neighborhood and that the voices of communities of color and low-income residents should be at the center of policy decisions that impact them. Our diverse 14 person staff translate these ideals into action across the state of Texas by working with community activists and leaders to assess and understand government policies and practices contributing to the crisis in affordable housing and inequality.  We help community leaders expose, confront, and win solutions for equity and justice in their homes and neighborhoods.

We at Texas Housers are hiring a new deputy director and here are some of the further details.

Responsibilities:

This is the second most senior position in the organization.  The deputy director has principal responsibility for day-to-day work of staff, provides routine reporting and accountability to funders and manages external relations with the public and news media. The deputy director provides strategic oversight of policy and advocacy strategy alongside the co-directors.

The responsibilities of the deputy director include:

  • Serves as the organization’s chief of staff in project planning, direction, supervision, training, recruitment, mentoring, professional development. This includes helping staff work as a team, coaching staff through internal or external challenges, and supporting individual contributions of 13 (and growing) staff members toward collective impact.
  • Helps to implement the board and co-directors’ vision of racial equity, inclusion, and belonging into the organization’s culture, internal policies, and overall work strategies.
  • Works with the co-directors and staff to develop external messaging strategies, oversees production of effective publications and, in conjunction with our communications manager, develops communication strategy and relations with the news media.
  • Is a key advisor for staff’s day-to-day policy and advocacy work, holding a long-term vision for housing justice while leveraging urgent opportunities for advocacy in the immediate and short term.
  • Assists with grant writing, fundraising, funder relations, grant reporting and assumes the lead in producing Texas Housers’ annual fundraiser.
  • Carries out other activities and leads on special projects as assigned.

 The deputy director reports to the organization’s two long-time co-directors.

Education:
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Graduate degree is helpful. Academic training and or professional experience in public policy, planning, journalism, management, law, housing, civil rights and community organizing are all relevant.

Experience:
Five years or more of relevant experience with demonstrated effectiveness preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Strong skills and successful experience in mentoring, management, and personnel support.
  • Experienced and talented communicator with knowledge of the needs of the public, people living with low incomes, public officials, and the news media.
  • Strong writing and project planning skills.
  • Familiar with government and with public policy in general and eager to develop greater expertise in housing and community development policy.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented; works well on deadlines.
  • Ability to support others in defining, managing, and obtaining support for their work assignments.
  • Capable of leading a multidisciplinary team of policy experts, organizers, researchers, and communications professionals to achieve their goals.

Salary: 
$65,000-$80,000 (based on qualifications and experience)

Location: 
The preference is for the person to work out of our Austin office. We will also consider exceptional applicants who prefer to be based in our Houston or San Antonio offices. The position requires periodic travel between our three offices and occasional representation of the organization at state and national meetings and conferences.
