Texas Housers needs an Eviction Prevention Specialist to manage our CourtWatch team.

Recruit and supervise a team of eviction court observers to document and report information in real-time to support advocacy, policy to protect renters and homeowners facing eviction or foreclosure.

Texas Housers, Texas’ leading low-income housing, community development research and policy organization seeks a Court Watch Coordinator. We work closely with grassroots volunteers, community leaders and organizations representing low-income people and neighborhoods, legal aid attorneys, and government officials to promote equitable access to federal rent assistance funding and equitable treatment of tenants in eviction courts. JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Eviction Prevention Specialist will be responsible for managing Texas Housers’ Eviction Solidarity Network as well as connecting with tenants in Houston, Texas. They will also develop a firm understanding of rental assistance programs and funding associated with evictions. The Eviction Prevention Specialist will report to Texas Housers Houston Regional Director Julia Orduña and Eviction Prevention Manager Ally Harris.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee approximately five paid court watchers including recruitment, supervision, 1:1s, training, and reporting.
  • Coordinate volunteer court watchers including recruitment, supervision, 1:1s, training and reporting.
  • Foster community and camaraderie among the paid and volunteer court watchers using in-person meetings, email, Slack, and Zoom.
  • Debrief court watchers, translate their observations into written reports, collect written reports, and provide to Texas Housers’ COVID-19 taskforce.
  • Participate in Court Watch individually and with paid and volunteer staff to support their training, understanding and reporting of observations.
  • Gather and write eviction stories for our records and for our website. This requires talking to tenants about sensitive issues related to their evictions.
  • Assist in tracking and reporting federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program funding and other federal funding sources that are administered locally by state and local governments.
  • Leverage the expertise of Texas Housers staff, academics, government officials, and community leaders to understand and teach court watchers what to look for and report in eviction proceedings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS – REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma
  • Read and write English
  • Computer literate
  • Organized, good communicator, relates well with people
  • Excellent organization, time management, and project management skills
  • Problem solver and critical thinker
  • Understanding and empathy for the economic challenges faced by people with low incomes
  • Commitment to social, economic, and racial justice
  • Self-confidence, humility, and intelligence

 PREFERRED COMPETENCIES – NOT REQUIRED BUT HELPFUL:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Read and write Spanish
  • Education/experience in legal & courtroom procedures, eviction court, civil rights law
  • Public administration and public policy, especially in the fields of housing
  • Experience in grassroots community outreach, education and engagement
  • Skills in research and policy analysis, or desire to learn
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, including familiarity with Excel
  • Familiarity with contemporary social science research in housing policy, urban and rural sociology, economics, African-American or Mexican-American history or related areas
  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with strong personalities, peers, attorneys, civil servants, neighborhood leaders, media, public officials

 DETAILS:

  • Remote for now, Must be located in Houston, TX. May involve some in-Texas travel
  • One-year project

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:

  • English; proficiency in Spanish is a plus.

COMPENSATION:

  • $48,000 full-time (40 hours per week), one year commitment
  • Two weeks of paid personal time, one week sick leave
