In Memoriam: Housing advocate and beloved board member Standish Meacham

Texas Housers honors the life of Standish Meacham who served on the board of the organization for several years. The lifelong Houser passed last week while enjoying retirement in Maine.

A professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin, he wrote on social housing during the past century in Great Britain. He served on the board of Texas Housers from 1996 to 2009 and as its chair for six of those years.

As chair of the Texas Housing Colloquia, he brought together housers from diverse backgrounds to examine the historical and social aspects of US housing policy. Standish was a founding member of the Texas Housing Forum, which worked to advance public support for affordable housing across the state.

A passionate advocate of housing for the poor, his tireless efforts engaged many others to support overcoming the crisis low-income people face in housing in Texas.

Standish was a gifted teacher, a passionate reformer, a sage advisor and a loyal friend.

He asked that memorials be made to Texas Housers.
