Texas Housers has officially re-launched our Bexar County eviction mapping tool, now updated with the most recent available eviction data from 2024. The interactive tool allows users to identify the neighborhoods – as well as the individual properties – that received the most eviction filings last year. Intended to help elected officials, service providers, housing advocates and more understand where the greatest need for anti-eviction resources exists in Bexar County, the tool includes map layers that summarize eviction filings by City Council Districts, Justice of the Peace Precincts, Independent School Districts, and census tracts, serving as a neighborhood-level proxy for analyzing local eviction patterns.
The data shows that a relatively small set of chronic eviction hotspots continues to drive a disproportionate share of filings year after year. Research is clear: evictions destabilize families, harm children’s health and education, increase homelessness, and create long-term barriers to housing access. These findings are especially urgent in light of recent legislative attempts to further speed up the eviction process, which would make it even harder for renters to defend themselves in court or access legal assistance in time. Understanding where evictions are concentrated and which property owners are driving the problem is essential to any meaningful policy response.
With today’s release of the 2024 Bexar County Eviction Case Dashboard, we share the following insights in summary:
- 27,012 eviction cases were filed against Bexar County residents in 2024, which equates to approximately 9 in every 100 Bexar County renter households.
- Eviction filings in 2024 were not evenly distributed across Bexar County; instead, they were highly concentrated in specific areas, with the Northwest consistently emerging as a hotspot.
- The geography of eviction in Bexar County continues to be shaped by a small number of high-evicting properties.
- Twelve percent of all 2024 filings came from just 30 properties, mirroring the pattern seen in 2023.
- Nearly half of the properties that ranked among the highest evicting in 2024 also ranked among the highest evicting in 2023.
- Many of the highest evicting properties in 2024 share ownership, and a significant share continue to be owned by entities based outside of San Antonio.
The Bexar County Eviction Case Dashboard can now be used to identify the areas of the county where renters are at highest risk of displacement and its long-term negative impacts, and to guide discussions among policymakers about the tenant protections and enforcement mechanisms needed to address a persistent and worsening eviction problem in Bexar County.
Stay tuned for an upcoming deep dive report on high-evicting corporate owners in San Antonio and Houston, which will provide a more detailed look at the actors driving eviction filings.
