U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan today announced HUD is allocating $3.7 billion in disaster aid to 11 States.
HUD has awarded Texas $1,743,001,247 of new funds for Hurricane Ike rebuilding, bringing the total awarded to Texas to $3,057,991,440.
As I have pointed out repeatedly, the State of Texas’ plan for administering these funds is grossly inadequate, unaccountable and will ultimately prove irresponsible.
HUD must require the State of Texas to produce a far better vision for using this new allocation of funds than the State exhibited in the plan for the first allocation.
It is now incumbent upon Governor Perry to take another look at the method of allocation for housing disaster assistance and to prepare a new plan that will ensure that the monies are spent properly, on the highest priority needs, are allocated promptly and with the highest level of accountability.
