For the past several months, residents of the Sunnyside neighborhood in south Houston have been developing a comprehensive plan to shed light on the challenges facing the historic, predominantly African-American community – including high crime, poor schools, concentrated poverty and subsidized housing and much more – and offer solutions. We’ve been proud, along with our partners at the Texas Organizing Project, to assist in this effort. And now, the Sunnyside Neighborhood Plan has officially been released.
You can visit the website SunnysidePlan.org to read the plan and explore its four main sections, which detail the history of disinvestment and discrimination in Sunnyside and the resulting issues of youth and education, crime and safety, and community development, housing and infrastructure. The plan is also available for download as a PDF.
The next stage of the process is the implementation of the strategies outlined by Sunnyside Plan participants (action plans for each issue are available at the end of each section). We look forward to continuing to work with Sunnyside residents as they hold their government to account for the conditions in their neighborhood and pursue remediation.
