We at Texas Housers are excited to announce that we have brought two new members into our organization and can proudly call them Housers. Over the past several months, we have searched across the state to find the perfect candidates who understand the mission of achieving housing justice for low-income Texans, and we have found those individuals in Favianna Moreno and Jax Garcia.
Favianna joins Texas Housers as our new Advocacy Director following several years of legislative work at the Capitol Building in Austin. In this role, she will lead our legislative efforts as well as coalition building with all groups, elected officials, and community members who are ready to improve the housing of low-income Texans.
Going forward, Favianna will develop our legislative priorities, policy public education efforts, and maintain meaningful relationships with impacted communities across Texas. Her experience in this arena is rooted in her work in the Texas House of Representatives, where she served as Chief of Staff and Policy Director for Rep. Penny Morales Shaw.
Prior to her legislative work, she worked on colonia-focused housing advocacy in the Rio Grande Valley. A Brownsville native, Favianna holds a B.A. in Psychology and Criminal Justice from St. Edward’s University. In her free time, she enjoys reading, spending time with her two dogs and cat, and time at her home in Northwest Austin with her partner.
Our next new member to join Texas Housers is Jax Garcia who is our Statewide Community Organizing and Power Building Director. Jax has grassroots organizing experience grounded in relationship building with directly impacted communities. They have previously focused on issues relating to public education, immigration justice, and electoral engagement.
At Texas Housers, Jax will co-create collective power with organizations and community members across Texas and craft organizing strategies that reflect the lived experience of those affected by housing inequity. As a firm believer that sustainable change is built from trust and a common goal, Jax is dedicated to empowering the voices of low-income Texans and mobilizing leaders in communities to organize. As native San Antonian, they enjoy connecting with nature by visiting local trails and going on long bike rides.
We cannot wait for you to meet Favianna and Jax, and learn more about each of their aspirations and goals for housing justice in our state. Let’s get to work!
