These are heady times for fair housing advocates. In the wake of a historic month for fair housing which included a stunning affirmation of the Fair Housing Act by the Supreme Court and the President’s announcement of a new role for HUD in enforcing fair housing, now comes a new HBO mini-series on housing integration from David Simon, the creator of The Wire and Treme.
Here’s the trailer:
The six-part miniseries is based on a very good nonfiction book of the same name by Lisa Belkin, exploring “notions of home, race and community through the lives of elected officials, bureaucrats, activists and ordinary citizens in Yonkers, NY.” The miniseries premieres August 16.
Chatter among Texas fair housing advocates holds that even the immensely talented Mr Simon will be hard pressed to convincingly present the outlandish characters that emerge in a fair housing fight. We will all be glued to the tube to find out how he does.
