Texas Housers and interfaith community groups call on state leaders for eviction moratorium

As our nation marches toward a new year, we also edge toward a cliff with mass evictions on a scale we have not seen in generations. On January 1, 2021, there will no longer be a federal eviction moratorium from the Centers for Disease Control to protect the many families who aren’t receiving income during the pandemic. With this in mind, Texas needs to take care of our own, and we can do that by installing a state moratorium until the Eviction Diversion Program is stood up and ready to aid the residents of our state.

In a joint letter with several interfaith community groups, Texas Housers has called on State Leaders Gov. Greg Abbott, Chief Justice Nathan L. Hecht, and the Justices of the Supreme Court of Texas to enact an Eviction Moratorium until March 1, 2020. Our state needs this in place while we stand up the EDP in order to protect millions of Texas families from being displaced and stop the spread of COVID-19 so close to the world defeating this disease.

Call for Urgent Action on Texas Eviction Diversion Program

I am urging that the Texas Supreme Court and our State leaders take immediate action to ensure the success of the Texas Eviction Diversion Program (EDP). The Centers for Disease Control moratorium, which has prevented hundreds of thousands of evictions in Texas during the pandemic, will expire at the end of the year. On that date, we ask that Governor Abbott and the Texas Supreme Court temporarily suspend evictions until March 1st, 2021 or until such time as the Eviction Diversion Program achieves fully effective statewide coverage.

This will safeguard million of Texans from being put on the street amid pandemic job loss and protect our populations from the spread of coronavirus due to displacement. Texas needs to take care of its own and install this moratorium.
