The time of year when we spotlight those doing extraordinary work to improve the housing of low-income Texans is soon approaching. On November 12, Texas Housers will host the 2024 Houser Awards, an annual luncheon celebrating extraordinary people dedicated to expanding affordable housing opportunities for Texans in quality neighborhoods – people we honor with the designation “Houser” with pride.

This year, we have the distinct honor of spotlighting the work of these fantastic Housers at a luncheon held on Tuesday, November 12, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at Zilker Clubhouse. The honorees this year are:

Kayla Miranda – Esperanza Center

Tanya Lavelle – Disability Rights Texas

The Honorable Steve Duble – Harris County Justice of the Peace Pct. 1.2 &
The Honorable Dolores Lozano – Harris County Justice of the Peace Pct 2.2

Kayla Miranda is a long-time community advocate who organizes her community around tenant issues, especially in public housing. Kayla and her neighbors have won important housing victories in San Antonio, like halting the demolition of the historic Alazan Courts and the improvement of habitability code enforcement. Tanya Lavelle has championed fair housing rights for more elders and people with a disability to secure adequate housing. Her determination to find a better way is benefitting thousands of low-income Texans. The Honorable Steve Duble and the Honorable Dolores Lozano have promoted fair and equal eviction proceedings, such as access to legal representation and improving landlord-tenant outcomes through legal mediation practices. They were also awarded the Eviction Diversion Initiative Grant by the National State Court Center.

We invite you to join us in honoring the great work these Housers do every day, and to support our work at Texas Housers, by becoming a sponsor of the Texas Houser Awards. To remain a courageous and independent voice for low-income families, we do not accept government funding. Instead, we depend on the support of people like you. Your sponsorship helps us continue our work.

To become a Sponsor, purchase tickets to the 2024 Houser Awards, visit our event page and help build Texas Housers’ future. You may also mail a check directly to our Austin office. For more information email, please email Julia Orduña at julia@texashousing.org.
