Texas Housers has officially re-launched our Bexar County eviction mapping tool, with updated eviction data from 2023. The interactive tool allows users to identify the neighborhoods, as well as individual properties, that received the most eviction filings in 2023. Intended to help elected officials, service providers, and housing advocates understand where the greatest need for anti-eviction resources exists in Bexar County, the tool now includes map layers that summarize eviction filings by City Council Districts, Justice of the Peace Precincts, and Independent School Districts.
With today’s release of the Bexar County Eviction Case Dashboard, we share the following insights:
- 24,533 eviction cases were filed against Bexar County residents in 2023, which equates to 8 in every 100 Bexar County renter households.
- Eviction filings were not evenly dispersed across Bexar County in 2023, but rather concentrated in certain areas. The Northwest side consistently appeared as an area with a high rate of eviction.
- The geography of eviction in Bexar County was determined in large part by a small number of high evicting properties, and a smaller number of property owners.
- Twelve percent of the 24,533 eviction cases filed in Bexar County in 2023 were contributed by just 30 high evicting properties.
- Many of the highest evicting properties in 2023 are owned by the same entities, and more than two thirds of the 30 highest evicting properties in 2023 are owned by entities based outside of San Antonio.
Research has well established that evictions cause severe harm to the health of individuals, families, and communities. The Bexar County Eviction Case Dashboard can now be used, first, to identify areas of the county where renters are most at risk of experiencing eviction and their lasting negative impacts and, second, to inform discussions about needed policy reforms to address a persistent eviction problem in Bexar County.
We invite you to explore the dashboard, our findings, and recommendations here.
