Today, Texas Housers announces our legislative priorities for the 89th Texas Legislature, which begins January 14th, 2025. Housing will be a central issue at the Capitol this spring. Texas Housers supports reforms that would dramatically improve housing for Texas’ most cost burdened, low-income residents.
Low-income Texans face multiple overlapping crises on the issue of housing. More and more, Texans cannot afford their homes, and this cost burden is heavily concentrated among lowest-income households and renters. Tenant protections in Texas have been stripped back to next to nothing, placing renters in unstable situations and increasing the risk of homelessness. Texas’ affordable housing programs are falling far short of their promise to deliver dignified housing that is affordable, stable, and fair.
We advocate that to help address Texas’ most pressing housing issues, legislators must:
- Address housing cost burden;
- Restore basic protections for renters under the law; and
- Improve the effectiveness of state housing programs for low-income Texans.
Within these three categories, we invite you to explore our full list of legislative priorities on our priorities one-pager.
In the coming weeks and months, we will be rolling out a wide variety of useful materials to help you navigate low-income housing issues at “the lege” this spring. Check in with us often for policy briefs detailing critical issues and programs, how-to materials, and much more.
We invite you to bookmark our “2025 Texas Legislature” landing page with our running “bill list” of housing-related bills that have been filed, which we will be updating throughout the session. This will also be our homepage for all #lege25 related information.
Join us this spring to demand transformational change for low-income housing in Texas!
