Video: Examining how Texas reduced government-funded housing segregation

Did a fair housing suit actually cause the State of Texas to reduce racial segregation?

That’s the question our recent report, Fair Housing and Balanced Choices, sought to answer. By analyzing the locations of housing developments funded with Low Income Housing Tax Credits before and after a suit forced changes to the State’s allocation process, our research team found that there has been a marked improvement in where tax credit developments are built in Texas.

I spoke with Susan Watkins, our fair housing planner and one of the report’s authors, about how the findings were reached and what they mean for fair housing and individual choice. The images in Susan’s slideshow, including maps of where tax credit developments are located in Texas’ major metropolitan areas, are available in the full report.
